Autumn can be a beautiful time of year, so why not reflect this in your bedroom?

There is something quite rewarding about changing your room with the seasons. Perhaps that is simply moving the furniture around at the start of each season, or it is buying new bedding and accessories for your room that, to you, reflect the season.
As far as autumn is concerned it is the colours that are so vibrant that would be fantastic to reflect into your room. Dark oranges, yellows, gold’s and reds mixed in with a hint of green will look beautiful. So purchase some bedding that has a hint of some of these colours, or a throw that can lie over your bed during the day. You can also add a little autumn colour with a few carefully selected cushions which can be scattered round the room or on the bed.
Autumn is the time of year for the leaves falling around our feet. Collect a few of these and place them between two heavy books. Give them a week and they will become pressed, dry and ready to use for decoration. You can place them in a simple glass frame to create an autumnal picture which you can display on your bed side table or on the wall. With the rest of your pressed leaves you can string them together and hang them from your ceiling or simply scatter them in a glass vase for a touch of the outdoors.

Finally why not treat yourself to a warmer duvet for your autumn room. Get a higher tog duvet and feel the benefits. At online department store Very they have a wide choice of duvets which you can browse through and decide which is best for you. Do go for a higher tog than you would initially think to go for because winter is approaching and you will need the extra warmth.

Give Your Bedroom a New Look with a Wooden Bed

Wooden bed frames are increasingly becoming popular. Even though its competitors; metal beds and divan beds, are still many people’s first choices, wooden beds will create a very homely and personal look. The main advantage with wooden beds is of course that they are available in many different types of wood, giving you more choice.
Pine beds are probably the most common type of wooden beds. Due to its accessibility it is also perhaps the cheapest type of wooden bed. Pine is easy to treat and is therefore available in lighter and darker finishes. Chose between a solid head and foot board or a sprung head and foot board, for the design you prefer.
If you want a more luxurious bed; look at oak tree beds or chestnut beds with a darker finish. Darker and solid wooden beds, preferably with an antique finish will look both traditional and elegant.
If you like Scandinavian design; look at beds in oak finish, honey pine or cinnamon finish where the bed frame is simple but yet elegant.
There are also white coloured wooden beds, made with either a gloss or an antique and worn finish. These beds look wonderful in a cottage style room where the walls are white, and perhaps some of the interior is decorated with floral pattern. The white wooden bed is the ultimate romantic bed.

How to Choose the a Carved Wood Wall Art

A home is not a home if it does not exude a sense of comfort and peace. Therefore, you obviously chose the furniture for your bedroom and correspondingly the curtains, bed sheets, cushions, lamps, and such other accessories meticulously in order to complement each other. However, most often, the walls are forgotten. They stand bare and uninteresting, though occasionally covered up with some shade of paint, but still boring. A simple, yet carefully selected wall art can do wonders, specifically carved wood pieces, as they add a touch of elegance to your home.

However, you can’t just go about putting up any piece you deem sufficient. When choosing a carved wood wall art you should first take into account the theme or style of the room. If your living room has an antique style, a 15th century art design would be your best choice. You can choose from landscape to Buddha carvings. As for the dining area, a wooden grille is a good choice.

Other than the theme, the color scheme of the room and the wall space that you want to liven up should also be considered when scouting for the perfect wall décor. A dull sandalwood piece would not go well with a pale background, but a rich dark brown rosewood art wood would definitely stand out. As for the wall space, round or rectangular wooden grilles look good on wide or high ceilinged walls.

Moreover, there is a large variety of carved wood wall art you can choose from. From different types of wood to a wide range of designs, the options are endless. Most wood wall décor is made of teak, maple, sandalwood and pine. Of course, the type of wood can be matched to that of the furniture or room paneling. As for designs, you can choose from floral and botanical cuts to intricate grilles. You can also find carved wood wall art with motifs from the 15th and 19th century eras, as well as carved animals and figures.

Naturally, carved wood décor does not come at a marginal price, as some are partially handcrafted and use only the best wood for durability. The price also depends on the size and design of the art work. However, it is not so difficult to get your hands on a decent looking wooden art work at a reasonable price from local furniture stores.

Considering the vast options before you, you can make every room in your house unique. So go ahead and let your personality radiate from the walls of your home through the richness of the carved wood wall art that you have so thoughtfully selected.

Decorating Ideas about Citronella Tea Light Candles

Tea light candles are small cylindrical candles, which are usually half an inch to an inch thick with an aluminum base casing. They are utilized for various purposes which may be decorative, votive or just for the simple reason of setting up a light. These candles are commercially available in different scents like vanilla, lemon or citronella. Among these, citronella offers something unique.

The primary ingredient behind these Citronella tea light candles is the Citronella oil, which is obtained from dried Cymbopogon Nardus or simply known as Citronella grass.  It is a coarse, cane-like grass that originated in Tropical Asia. It is unpalatable and therefore cannot be eaten, but essential oils can be extracted from it. This oil, commonly known as Citronella oil is used as an insect repellant. The scent of the oil as the candle gets heated liberates a certain kind of odor that repels mosquitoes and insects, though the smell doesn’t kill or even harm them.  It also masks the smell of humans. For outside night events, adding Citronella lights within the vicinity would definitely make the affair insect-free and enjoyable. Just make sure you keep the candles burning all throughout the night.  It may be also used during ordinary nights at your home just to keep those bugs away. Place them all over your balcony or yard to enjoy the stars without dealing with itchy insect bites later.

Lighting multiple citronella tea lights create a dramatic effect. Adding dainty holders to these candles will instantly create a beautiful ambiance in the room or patio. The natural scent that the candles give off may be irritating to the insects, but to humans, it is relaxing and soothing. You can add enjoyment to your reading time with a lemony scent to keep you refreshed. Because of their size, they don’t drip too much wax and so using entails easy maintenance.

Even if they are unlit, they still give out a subtle scent. Allow them to sit on your bathroom sink to add details. Since they are lightweight and tiny, they can be decorated effortlessly. They can be positioned in rows, circles or arcs on the center of your dining table. They would also look good on stands, forming a tiered upshot. Lighting them up and appreciate the soft lighting that it would emit. This gentle radiance will set a romantic, relaxed mood and is perfect for an intimate dinner. For a touch of drama, you can make them stay afloat inside vases or big bowls. Adding flowers to the floating lights will certainly instigate something positive from your visitors.

Another function of Citronella tea lights is to boil incense. Place a dish with an adequate amount of incense in it, and then place this container atop the candle using a delicate stand.  Heat from the candle will warm the incense and would give off the delicate, lemony scent.

Tea light candles are great detail adders to your homes. So purchase some and explore the things that you can do with them.

Home DIY – Building Arches in Brickwork

If you’re making a large opening in a wall for a new door, window or serving hatch or where you’re knocking two rooms into one – you must include adequate support for the masonry above, and any load that bears on it. The usual way to span an opening such as this is to bridge it with a rigid horizontal beam called a lintel, or, for very large openings, a rolled steel joist, or RSJ. But this limits you to a square or rectangular opening which you may not think is really suitable for a more decorative effect.

In the past, arches – although there were many complex, elegant variations on the basic shape – were used for more practical reasons: wider openings could be spanned than was possible with timber or stone lintels, and they were also used in conjunction with lintels or in long stretches of wall to relieve the pressures on the structures.

Nowadays, however, with the development of lightweight steel lintels, RSJs and reinforced concrete lintels – which can be used to span much wider openings – arches aren’t a really practical or cost-effective proposition. Consequently they’re used mainly for their decorative effect on smaller-scale structures.

How an arch works
An arch works in virtually the same way as a lintel, by transmitting the weight of the walling above, and its load, to solid masonry at each side of the opening.

The individual components of your arch -usually bricks, reconstituted stone or natural stone blocks – are laid on a curve, forming a compact, stable beam

Types of arch
The type of arch you choose to build depends on whether you simply want a decorative effect or a load-bearing structure.

You can use arches on internal walls as conventional doorways, to create an open-plan scheme between two rooms, or as a serving hatch. On external walls you can form arches above doors and windows, and outdoors they can make an attractive feature of your garden gate, connected to your boundary walls or even to the house.

Decorative arches
If your arch is to be a purely aesthetic feature indoors you don’t necessarily have to build a sturdy structure from masonry. Instead you can make a decorative arch to your own specification from plasterboard, hardboard or chipboard panels cut with a curved edge and fixed to the masonry at the sides of the opening underneath the lintel of a conventional doorway. You can use hardboard, which can be bent, for the underside of your arch. You don’t need to alter the structure of the wall in any way.

To finish off your arch, if you’re careful to conceal the join between it and the wall, you can simply decorate it with wallpaper or textured paint.

Prefabricated arch formers made of galvanised steel mesh offer a ready-made choice of arch profiles. They come in various widths of opening – and you can even buy simple corner pieces to turn an ordinary doorway into an arched opening. The preformed mesh frames are simply attached to the masonry, under the lintel, then they’re plastered over to match the rest of the wall. You can even use them outdoors for a rendered arch finish.

Structural arches
However, where your arch is to form an integral and load-bearing part of a wall its construction is rather more complicated. Brick is probably the best material to use for this type of arch, you can either leave it exposed as a feature or clad it with render outside or plaster inside for a smooth finish.

Arch profiles
There are various types of arch profiles you can make One of the commonest is the ‘flat’ arch  It’s suitable for narrow spans up to about 1.2m (4ft) and the bricks – usually special wedge-shaped types – are set to radiate from a central, vertical point, called the keystone You can make large flat arches by laying conventional-shaped bricks vertically in a ‘soldier course on a steel or concrete boot lintel or resting on a length of angle iron used in conjunction with a concrete lintel.

On openings wider than about 1.8m (6ft) the brickwork may look as if it’s sagging fractionally and you can remedy this optical illusion by laying the bricks so that the centre of the arch is about 12mm higher than the ends. One way you can do this is to set the bricks on a curved strip of flat iron instead of the angle iron.

Simpler types of arch, which don’t need the use of specially-shaped bricks, or the additional support of a lintel, are the ‘semicircular’ or segmental’ types. Both of these arches form part of a circle. The centre of the circle in a semi-circular arch is on the imaginary line between the highest bricks on each side of the opening, from which the arch starts to curve inwards. Its diameter equals the distance between the sides of the opening. For a segmental arch the centre line of the much larger circle which the arch follows is some way below this point.

Because the bricks used for these arches are the conventional format the ‘wedging’ effect necessary to spread the load of the wall sideways is achieved by shaping the mortar joints between each brick. However, if you are contriving a solid wall above the arch, you’ll have to cut the bricks at each side to fit the arch shape

Building piers
The base of your arch, called the ‘springing point’, or the point at which it starts to curve inwards, must be supported on sound brickwork at each side, for it’s here that the load of the structure is transferred.

If you’re building an arch into an existing wall, or if you’re building a new wall containing an arch, the load will be taken on solid bearings at each side. But if you’re building a freestanding arch between two walls, such as a surround for a garden gate, you’ll have to build separate supporting columns called piers’ at each side. Build up your piers from 225mm (9in) thick brickwork on concrete foundations making sure that they’re set perfectly vertical and that each course matches that of the opposite pier.

Supporting the arch
Semi-circular or segmental arches are usually built on a timber former or support called ‘centring’.

Planning Crazy Garden Paving

Garden paving doesn’t have to be all squares and rectangles. With crazy paving you can have a more informal look in any shape you fancy, and you can use it on wall surfaces too.

Crazy paving is a versatile material that can be used as a resilient and attractive surface for patios, driveways, garden paths or steps, or as a decorative feature in an otherwise plain paving scheme.

It’s simply broken paving slabs and you can often buy it quite cheaply, by the tonne, from your local as demolition material. Slabs bought in this way will usually be a heavy duty variety used for pavements and have a rather dull grey color and a relatively plain finish, but you can add interest in the way you lay the pieces. Local building contractors can often supply broken slabs of various textures in greens, pinks, reds and buff tones in sufficient quantities for use in paving. Natural stone can also be bought to make up crazy paving.

Planning crazy paving
Before you can begin to lay your paving, sketch out some ideas for its overall shape, size and, in the case of paths, its route through the garden. Transfer your final design to graph paper so that you can use this to estimate the total area to be covered and place an order for the correct quantity of paving. You can also use your plan as a blueprint for ordering and laying the slabs.

Because of its irregular profile crazy paving, unlike conventional square or rectangular slabs, can be used to form curves, such as a winding path, a decorative surround to a pond, or an unusual-shaped patio. Although you have a lot of freedom in your creative design you mustn’t allow the paving to appear out of place with its surroundings. If your garden is strictly formal, for instance, avoid complex curves or too ‘busy’ a surface texture ¡ª the mix of angles could clash. Small areas of random paving can, on the other hand, give a plain scheme a visual ‘lift’.

Although crazy paving has an overall random design, it must be placed with some precision to avoid an unbalanced look. The best way to plan out an area of paving when you’ve decided upon a basic site is to dry-lay it when the base is complete.

Separate the pieces that have one or more straight sides for use as edging and corners and lay these first, choosing only the largest pieces ¡ª small ones tend to break away.

You can lay the paving with a ragged outline to achieve an informal look, but you will still have to use the largest pieces for the edging. When plants have been introduced into the irregular edges and allowed to trail over the slabs you’ll find that your path soon assumes an established air.

It’s not important to make a regular joint width between the pieces ¡ª in fact, the paving will probably look much more natural if the joints vary. Fit the smaller inner pieces together like a jig-saw puzzle, mixing colors to best effect. When dry-laying the slabs avoid a continuous joint line across the path as this can be jarring to the eye and weakens the structure.

Remodeling and Maximizing the Potential of Mini-Bathrooms

Small bathroom designs need not be stressful for homeowners. With some creativity and patience, you can provide your bathroom with a complete makeover while maximizing its space. Below are some great tips for renovating small bathrooms.

In bathrooms, first impressions are achieved through the deft use of colors. Small bathrooms appear cramped and suffocating when dark, heavy colors are used. Pastel and other light colors are ideal for small bathrooms. These colors can provide an illusion of space, and it can make a room feel relaxing, airy, and fresh. Try out different color combinations for your fixtures, cabinets, walls, and floor.

Your unused spaces can actually be usable. In maximizing small bathrooms, every inch of space is important. You may want to push your tub until it touches the wall to eliminate any space it may leave at the back. Corners can also be utilized for installing a corner shower booth or hanging sinks. Overhead spaces can contain hamper hooks, racks, and cabinets. It is highly recommended that the floor should not contain anything but the toilet, shower stall, and bathtub.

All of bathroom fixtures and furniture pieces should be kept small. Bathroom fixtures come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. You do not need gigantic fixtures in an already cramped bathroom space. Settle for small but efficient and comfortable bathroom fixtures. In purchasing new ones, you may want to bring the biggest member of your family along.

A mirror is a necessity in all bathrooms. Unadorned mirrors are perfect for small bathrooms, while extremely tiny bathrooms can have small, round mirrors. If your bathroom is not very cramped, you could install wide mirrors that cover walls. The fact is that mirrors provide not just accent, but the illusion that the space is bigger than it actually is.

Lights can also be helpful in making the bathroom appear more spacious. Natural lights are preferable over artificial lights. Light coming from windows or overhead openings can provide for a relaxing mood and fresh air for those who want to unwind in the tub. It is recommended that you choose light fixtures that provide a generous amount of light. You may also want to invest in dimmers if you think you would want a more subtle mood in the future.

Bathrooms are not storage spaces, nor should they be overly decorated. The bathroom will have much more space if you remove some of your things that should not have been there in the first place, like magazine racks, excess hampers, towel racks, and extra cabinets.

Your ideal bathroom can be achieved even with a small bathroom. All you need is a little imagination and a large amount of resourcefulness.

Different Ways To Make A Retaining Wall

There are a lot of different ways you can make a retaining wall and I want to show you what some of those are. With so many people putting retaining walls around their homes, gardens, garages, and even their shops you will want to have different options so that your retaining wall doesn’t look just like your neighbors.

Different Retaining Wall Ideas

Gabion Retaining Wall – This is one retaining wall that many people use. The thing that most people like about them is they give you more protection and also a great look. When most people think about a strong retaining wall they will often times thing about only concrete or boulder structures but that is not the strongest wall out there, Gabion is.

Brick Retaining Wall – A brick retaining wall is something that I really like and the reason is because they look different. What most people do is they use big retaining wall bricks but what you should think about is mixing up the retaining wall brings with smaller red bricks to give the wall a little different look. Although this will take longer to construct, it will look a lot better and I think you will really like the way it turns out.

Stone Retaining Wall – One other thing that looks really good are stone retaining walls. Most people like the way they look when people use large stones but if you don’t have the space for this, then you might want to stick with smaller stones. Just know that stones are very strong but you need to make sure there are not cracks in them or else you might have to deal with replacing a stone without compromising the rest of the structure.

Out of all of these the one that is used the most are gabion retaining enclosures. The reason these are used the most is because they last the longest and they provide the most strength. This is what the military even uses to setup in field bases as protection.

Whether Kitchen Remodeling Is Possible At a Cheap Rate?

Kitchen remodeling at a cheap rate is always possible but you should be ready to put some extra effort in this task. Quality facilities at affordable price need a good deal of research and comparisons. Then you should adjust with certain limitations. Cheap products do not mean that you are opting for the low quality products.

For minimizing the cost of kitchen remodeling the most effective method is to set a budget for all the expenditure before you get into the task. If you can take the help of some good contractors whom you know well, then the process can be a little bit easier. If this is not possible don’t try to give away the project to some contracting companies. Better you can take the responsibility.

At the very beginning I told you that low cost kitchen reconstruction and installation means you have to compromise little bit in certain areas. Don’t try to replace your entire kitchen facilities. You can make use of the existing parts of your kitchen by just modifying it. Changing the paint or front panel or some parts can give the new and modern look to your kitchen.

If you use this technique you will save some amount of money and that can be used for some other purposes. With a low budget don’t try for a complete kitchen remodeling. That may end up with the installation of some low quality products. Just refresh your kitchen with a new touch.

You can just make a list of item which are now there in your kitchen and can make another list in which you can include the items which you expect in your new kitchen. Next step is that call an experienced architect to verify that how the existing items in your kitchen can be altered and used in the kitchen remodeling. Then eliminate those things from the new list. Also estimate the cost of this process. Now you are ready with the plan for your kitchen remodeling.

After getting planning permission, consider your home insurance

Improving your home may well be a better idea than moving at the moment, especially given the economic climate. With property prices tumbling across Britain – and predicted to continue falling for some years to come – it’s unsurprising that more and more households are finding that investing money in a renovation or extension is the best way to increase their living space.

If the project is fairly large, such as a loft conversion or building a conservatory, you’ll obviously need to look into planning permission and local building regulations , as failure to do so could result in having to pull down your extension or even facing a fine. However, there are other things to consider when you’re planning a home improvement. Before, during and after a project, it’s important to review your home insurance, for a number of important reasons.

For a start, you’ll need to look into whether your policy would cover you in the event of a mishap during the building works, whether you’re carrying out the job yourself or bringing in a professional tradesman. In some cases, accidental damage cover may be what you need, but it’s always a good idea to speak to your provider and discuss your options. Honesty is always the best policy, even if it brings up your premiums slightly.

You should also keep in mind that an improved home is often worth more, not just in terms of its market value but the value of the contents contained within. For example, if you’ve decided to build a conservatory, it’s likely you’ll have spent a quid or two on furniture, fixtures and fittings. This means that you may need to increase the value of your contents cover to include these new items and reflect the fact that replacing your possessions would now be a more expensive affair than before.

Failing to get the right level of cover could lead to disaster, especially if there’s a major problem in your home such as a flood or fire. It’s important to remember that in the event of such a disaster, you will only ever get back goods to the value of your home insurance, no matter how much stuff you actually lost. Increasing the value of your home contents cover will almost always make your premiums more expensive, but it’s an investment that could turn out to be essential should the worst happen one day.

Quick Tips to Installing Vinyl Siding

Are you constantly thinking of ways to improve the outlook of your home? Do you wish for your home to be more attractive and presentable? Well, you might want to consider getting Vinyl Sidings.

There are of course several weaknesses of vinyl siding, but you must not forget that vinyl sidings have more than a few strengths. You could very engage a professional to install the vinyl siding for you, or you could opt to save cost by doing it yourself. If you are interested in doing it yourself, no matter what exterior you house is currently using, you will need a layer of wood. This is so it can provide the vinyl with a flat side to be installed into, as well as something to nail into to hold up the vinyl siding.

Before getting into the process of the work, you must make sure that you are familiar with measuring and cutting the siding pieces. There is a certain measurement that you will have to know when installing the plastic sidings because the size of the siding changes according to the weather. You might want to make sure that the nails are not holding the sidings too tight; need space to expand or vice versa.

To do that make sure the measure of the width and height of your exterior wall is accurate. Some of the tools that is needed will include: hammer, measurement tape, leveler, circular saw, utility knife, drill, latter, tin snips, nail slot punch, and a zip unlock tool.

After the measurements are done, you might want to find out the type of vinyl that would be suitable for your house (depending on the area you are staying or even the weather that your house might experience). There are various types, colours, and even textures of vinyl available in the market to suit your needs and taste.

Keeping Your Granite Counter Top Clean

Granite counter tops are generally easy to clean. No expensive liquid detergents or special cloth are needed. There is one important rule though; never leave spills to dry overnight. Always clean them up immediately before any stains set in. If you do accidentally let spills dry overnight, all is not lost. Just use a soft scrub pad to wipe off the dried spill.

You can use a mixture of vinegar, soap and water to clean your granite work counter weekly, or you can opt for a stone cleaner formulated with a neutral pH. Never use any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as these can scratch, pit or etch the surface. Some people recommend using normal dishwashing soap as a cleaning solution. However, it is viscous and can be difficult to rinse out entirely. The residue will build up and cause your granite counter top to look hazy and dull. A homemade suggestion is to use isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Simply pour a quarter cup of the liquid and two drops of dishwashing liquid into a quart-sized spray bottle and fill it to the brim. This inexpensive cleaning solution has been guaranteed to clean and shine your granite counter top in no time.

Another useful tool to have for a clean granite counter top is a microfiber cloth. This cloth can be used for daily cleaning as it can pick up household spills like fat and oil without leaving any streaks behind. Plus, no detergent is needed. Just use hot water for stubborn areas. It is advisable to clean small areas at a time to prevent water from drying up on their own and getting underneath the surface.

After cleaning or wiping your granite counter top with a cleaning solution, always remember to reseal it. Some strong alkaline products can break down the sealer. A sealed granite counter top does not prevent stains, but it does give more time to clean up stains before they set in.

Jersey Sheets – the Comfortable Bedding Solution

Jersey sheets made a splash when they debuted on the home bedding scene and why not – nothing beats the comfort of a familiar t-shirt. Knit like a t-shirt, a jersey sheet stretches and accommodates all the nooks and crannies of a mattress, fitting much the way your favorite tee does; jersey sheets are sometimes referred to as “t-sheets” (soft cotton sheets with a Jersey knit weave). Jersey sheets are cool in the summer months and cozy in winter – the best of both worlds – and their casual look is a favorite among kids and college students. Most jersey sheets are 100% cotton and all are knit, not woven like conventional sheets, so thread count is not something to consider when shopping for jersey sheets. When it comes to contemporary bedroom designs, be sure to consider jersey sheets as a bedding option – with their stretchy fit and breathable knit they make a great year-round sheet.
Want to know what’s fashionable in bedroom designs? Some things never go out of style, like jeans and a t-shirt, so dress your bed with the casual style and comfort of a favorite tee! Jersey sheets were first available only in solids or stripes but today patterns and prints are offered by a range of manufacturers – Bed Bath & Beyond has a good selection of jersey bedding including jersey sheets for cribs and extra long sheets for college kids. Jersey sheets are popular for many reasons – some folks prefer them over flannel sheets because they are softer, while others love jersey sheets because they never need ironing. With jersey sheets it’s easy to make the bed – they stretch and smooth nicely so there’s really no excuse to leave an unmade bed. Make up your mind to try something new but familiar and try out some jersey sheets – they may become your favorite tee!
